Hip Hop Mass A Great
Success!
Grace Church hosted its first Hip Hop Mass
on Saturday, November 17th and incorporating Hip Hop music in
worship service proved inspirational for attendees.
Grace was blessed to have the Truth &
Destiny Step Team and the Truth & Destiny Liturgical
Dance Team as performers. Their presence added a unique
component to the service and both groups are eager to
participate in future services.
The Hip Hop Mass is a new initiative
aimed at creating a worship service that will present the
Gospel in a way that transcends age, gender, race, religious
affiliation, & socio-economic status. The service follows
a traditional worship order, but incorporates hip hop music to
reach individuals who may otherwise not receive the church's
message. The goal is to reach out to young people & others
using their language & highlight their culture &
sensibilities to communicate the word of God.
There has been a great deal of dialogue surrounding the
use of the word "Mass" as opposed to "Service". My
understanding is that Mass can be used beyond the traditional
religious interpretation of the word. In fact, if you
look it up in the dictionary, one of the definitions that I
find quite appropriate is "reaching or designed to reach a
large number of people", which is exactly what we are trying
to accomplish.
Starting in January 2008, the Hip Hop Mass will take
place the first Saturday of every month at 5:30 pm. Our
hope is that each service will grow in attendance, so make
sure you tell a friend, family member, or neighbor about this
unique spiritual experience.

Christ Community Thanksgiving Services
Helps Many
On November 20th Grace hosted a Thanksgiving
Service in conjunction with Christ Community's annual food
distribution program. Hundreds filled Grace Church to
share in a service that featured prayer, songs, and remarks
from representatives of College Hill's local churches,
specifically College Hill Presbyterian, Second Baptist Church,
New Life Missionary Baptist Church, and First United Church of
Christ. It was truly inspirational to see every seat
filled in the church. I considered the experience a
glimpse into Grace's future!

The Spirit of Advent
Advent is marked by a spirit of expectation,
of anticipation, of preparation, of longing. There is a
yearning for deliverance from the evils of the world, first
expressed by Israelite slaves in Egypt as they cried out from
their bitter oppression. It is the cry of those who have
experienced the tyranny of injustice in a world under the
curse of sin, and yet who have hope of deliverance by a God
who has heard the cries of oppressed slaves and brought
deliverance! It is that hope, however faint at times,
and that God, however distant He sometimes seems, which brings
to the world the anticipation of a King who will rule with
truth and justice and righteousness over His people and in His
creation. It is that hope that once anticipated, and now
anticipates anew, the reign of an Anointed One, a Messiah, who
will bring peace and justice and righteousness to the
world. Part of the expectation also anticipates a
judgment on sin and a calling of the world to accountability
before God.
Advent Bible study to be each Sunday after
the 10:00 am service. This will consider the 1st Chapter
of Luke. If you are interested, sign the sheet on the
