Susan Lehman Comes to Grace

The Reverend Susan Lehman will celebrate Eucharist at Grace tomorrow.

Seven members of the congregation met her over a congenial lunch at the College Hill Coffee Shop earlier this week.

Asked how she sees herself in the role of priest, she said, "I am a waitress at the table of the Lord." Asked how she wants to be addressed, she said, "Susan."

Susan was ordained in 1977--the first woman priest ordained in Cincinnati. She remained in this diocese until 1968, when she was called to be chaplain at Sweet Briar College in central Virginia. Susan retired from full time ministry in 2001, and in 2006, moved back to Cincinnati with her husband, John Dalzell, a retired commercial writer who is now a practicing artist. They make their home on Fourth Street downtown.

An intriguing fact that some Googling revealed about Susan: At Sweet Briar College, the Susan Lehman Courage Award is presented to student-athletes who have demonstrated courage above and beyond the usual rigors of training and competition.

Thank You Very MuchThanks to ...

Gwynne Gabbard writes, "A huge THANK YOU to Grace Episcopal Church's people, and all the crowd of rhythm makers who gathered there, for the Rhythm for Wellness drumming and healing session the Wednesday before last!! It is such a blessing to be there, to use God's Energy for God's Kids, to hear and feel the drumming, flutes, rattles, and bells, to sense the ages of prayers that have gone up in that old sanctuary, and to hear those precious angels chant and sing.  What a joy!"

... Chuck Bowles and Lisa Perry, departing Mission Council members, for their service to the Grace Church congregation.

... Roger Perna and Wanda Miller for volunteering to serve as Senior & Junior Wardens for another year.

... Ken Lyon, Hawley Todd, Madeena Nolan and J White for volunteering to serve new terms on Mission Council.

... Grace Staples, Bill Jenne, Virginia Chapel and J While for volunteering to serve new terms on the Mission & Formation Team.

... Carol Lyon and David Mukasa for volunteering to serve as convention delegates.

... Thanks to Mary McLain, Chuck Bowles and Lisa Perry, who, as the nominating committee, made sure that all positions were filled with willing volunteers.

.... John Thayer, with help from Rhonda Sharp, for their hard work in putting together the Annual Report.

... Wanda Miller, who organized the wonderful Annual Meeting dinner following the service Sunday, and to all who helped in any way to prepare/provide it, especially Bob Jones, for moving tables and chairs out and for cleaning the floor, and Bob and Chuck Bowles for moving everything back in and bringing chairs from the Great Hall.  Ruth Bertram helped in the final setup.  Chuck did the flowers on the tables. Thanks also goes to all who brought food.  We have names of the main dishes, but some food arrived w/o donor's names. The main donors of food were:  Wanda Miller, Roger Perna, Ken Lyon, Ruth Bertram, Mary McLain, Maria Mukasa, Marjorie Shadd, Judy Handy and Bill Jenne.

.... Judy Handy, who stepped in to provide piano accompaniment for hymn singing during the recent healing Sunday service, so that Bill Jenne could participate in the laying on of hands for healing.

... Rhonda Sharp for giving the flowers on the altar this Sunday in memory of her mother, Cloma Partin.

... Barbara Todd who provided the flowers on the altar last Sunday (pictured right) in honor of her mother, Rose Mary Koch.

... Susan Lehman for leading our worship service this Sunday.

... the many people who have pitched in to help rebuild Holy Trinity Cathedral in Haiti. Already congregations and individuals have raised nearly $19,000 toward our matching goal of $30,000. Although we will continue to receive donations, the opportunity to have your contribution matched by the bishop through the Procter Fund expires on Shrove Tuesday. Individuals who wish to have their contributions matched must donate online or mail a check to be received at Diocesan House no later than Wednesday, Feb. 22. Please make checks payable to Rebuild our Church and send to: Diocese of Southern Ohio, 412 Sycamore St., Cincinnati, OH 45202 - ATTN: Haiti

Lenten Greens

Lent is a time of self examination. During this time, we do away with things that might distract us from our task.

At worship, we also put away what might be distracting. For that reason, there are only greens on the altar during Lent, not flowers. The greens are to calm us and look beyond the brightness and into our depths.

Thanks to Carol Lyon for this article.

Selected Short Subjects

From Rhonda Sharp: "I think some of our outreach  is working.  We've had several new visitors lately and some are returning.  Something's happening, and I hope it keeps happening.  This is great!"

Jackie Millay writes, "I'm happy to share that the wonderful Quantum Touch group finished their course splendidly just a few weeks ago.  Some of us are continuing to practice together as we see greater possibilities for growth, healing, and expansion. Thanks again to Grace."

From Grace Staples, from her winter headquarters in Florida:  "This past week I spent several days at St. Nathaniel's volunteering, book club and a 60's dinner dance last night.  (It was fun WATCHING the dancing.  Pete is fine but he had played 18 holes that day!)  Tell everyone I said 'Hi.'"

We've added several pictures of newcomers and regulars at our Wednesday night healing service to our members and friends online photo album. You can see the album here. If your picture isn't there or if you'd like a different picture, have Ken Lyon take your picture after church, or send a picture to webmaster@gracecollegehill.org.

Last week, Rachel Searcy wrote
, "We live so far away, but for some reason I keep reading the newsletters and missing Grace.  The church and people had such an impact on me while I was there.  I keep trying to find something closer to home, but I have never found anything that has gave me a feeling like Grace.  Thank you for keeping in touch.  I'd love to come back and join a mass again soon."  This week, Judy Handy replies, "Rachel, we miss you too; we had some good chats!  We look forward to seeing you soon."

Christ's Community in College Hill writes: "We are preparing for 2012 Summer Day camp.  We are asking all College Hill churches if they have any college students that would be interested in being a youth leader this summer. This would require them to attend a training camp June 3 to June 10 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville TN. Transportation will be provided. Camp will start June 11. We would like to have them submit resumes to CCCH by March 30th.  Please have them email their resumes to  ccch@fuse.net or mail them to 5819 Salvia Ave, 45224. This is a paid position. We are looking for 15 interns. If there are any questions, please contact Ralph or Lisa @ 541-0303."

Worship Bulletin Changes.
We know it is seldom possible to address all needs and requests, for all people, all the time. However, we regularly make format and content changes to our worship bulletin in an attempt to do just that, as well as to "use our resources rightly". As always, we rely upon and appreciate your feedback. Direct your ideas to Judy Handy (jhandy23@cinci.rr.com, 513-681-5829).
