Executive Committee Begins Meeting Weekly

The Management Task Force that formed during congregational meetings late last year recommended that the Executive Committee take responsibility for managing the day-to-day life of Grace Church. Mission Council agreed with the task force's recommendation.

The Executive Committee has begun meeting weekly on Monday afternoons. The committee is comprised of Senior Warden Roger Perna, Junior Warden Wanda Miller, and Mission & Formation Co-Chairs Carol Lyon & Hawley Todd.

The committee asks that if you have something you wish to discuss, talk to any member of the Committee.  They are looking for your dreams about incarnating our values as well as for your help in identifying any blind spots they may have--any issues that come up in the life of our church.
Sunday School Sunday Celebrates Our Young People

Last Sunday, Grace Church's young people were active participants in our worship service, and were congratulated on on completing another year of their classes.

Thanksgivings

The Executive Committee thanks Rhonda Sharp for bringing them her observations about issues that have arisen in the day-to-day life of Grace Church.  It was really helpful to get her insights.

Thank you to all who provided the delicious food and beverages for the Youth Sunday snack and chat and to the donor of the gifts to the youth.  Thanks to all the youth for their outstanding participation in the service.  Sunday School will resume in the fall.  Bible Study for Everyone continues in the parlor at 9 AM.

Thanks to Ruth Bertram for supplying a much needed Swifter duster for the office and to anonymous for the keyboard air spray dust remover.

We give thanks for the Ohio State Parolees who helped us again on May 24 with mowing, weeding, trimming bushes and cleaning floors.  We appreciate their hard work once a month on our behalf and enjoy sharing a delicious meal and conversation with them afterward.

Thanks to those who prepared lunch and supervised chores by the Ohio State Parolees on May 24th.

Think about the things you're thankful for. Then let us know at office@gracecollegehill.org

Altar Flowers

Altar flowers last Sunday were given in memory of Irene Bryeans by Ken & Carol Lyon.

Altar flowers this Sunday are given by an anonymous donor.

To donate altar flowers on the Sunday of your choosing, see the sign-up sheet in the church near the upper Belmont entrance. Or call the office. Or donate online here.

Short Subjects
Absalom Jones
In the absence of other short subjects in this issue, we'll treat you to this terrible joke that's making the rounds on the internet.

Painting the Church

There was a painter named Smokey MacGregor who was very interested in making a penny where he could, so he often thinned down his paint to make it go a wee bit further.

As it happened, he got away with this for some time. Eventually the local church decided to do a big restoration job on the outside of one of their biggest buildings.

Smokey put in a bid; and because his price was so low, he got the job.

So he set about erecting the scaffolding,  and setting up the planks, and buying the paint and, yes, I am sorry to say, thinning it down with turpentine.

Well, Smokey was up on the scaffolding, painting away, the job nearly completed, when suddenly there was a horrendous clap of thunder, the sky opened, and the rain poured down, washing the thinned paint from all over the church and knocking Smokey clear off the scaffold to land on the lawn among the gravestones, surrounded by telltale puddles of the thinned and useless paint.

Smokey was no fool. He knew this was a judgment from the Almighty, so he got down on his knees and cried, "Oh, God, oh, God, forgive me. What should I do?"

And from the thunder, a mighty voice spoke, (you're going to love this):  "Repaint! Repaint! And thin no more!"

Our Paschal Candle

After Grace's Paschal Candle died during our Pentecost Service, Wanda Miller decided to see about replacing it.  In the process, she learned a lot about this important fixture in many of our worship services.

Wanda came across the following interesting article on Wikipedia. She says, "Been at Grace for 43 years now and still learning."

Paschal candle

The Paschal candle is a large, white candle used at liturgy in the Western Rites of Christianity (Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, etc.). A new Paschal candle is blessed and lit every year at Easter, and is used throughout the Paschal season which is during Easter and then throughout the year on special occasions, such as baptisms and funerals.

Meaning of the Paschal candle

The flame of the Paschal candle symbolizes Christ as light of the world and his presence in the midst of his people. The Paschal candle is sometimes referred to as the "Easter candle" or the "Christ candle." The term "Paschal" comes from the word Pesach, which in Hebrew means Passover. The tall white candle in many ways signifies the Divine pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night that lead the Israelites in their Exodus from slavery in Egypt. ...

Description of the Paschal candle

For congregations that use a Paschal candle it is the largest candle in the worship space. In most cases today the candle will display several common symbols:

  1. The cross is always the central symbol, most clearly identifying it as the Paschal candle
  2. The Greek letters alpha and omega signify that God is the beginning and the end (from the Book of Revelation)
  3. The current year represents God in the present amidst the congregation
  4. Five grains of incense (most often red) are embedded in the candle (sometimes encased in wax "nails") during the Easter Vigil to represent the five wounds of Jesus: one in each hand, one in each foot, and the spear thrust into his side.

In the medieval church Paschal candles often reached a stupendous size. The Paschal candle of Salisbury Cathedral was said to have been 36 feet tall. ....

Worship Service Participants

Here is the worship volunteer schedule through the end of June. The schedule for July and on is a work in progress.  The whole schedule will be available on our website (gracecollegehill.org).

If you're scheduled and can't make it, find a substitute and let Ken Lyon (webmaster@gracecollegehill.org, 513-542-2941) know so the schedule can be updated.
