Worship in Air-Conditioned Comfort.

Absalom JonesBothered by 100+ degree temps outside? Not to worry. Sunday worship at Grace is in the air-conditioned Great Hall during July and August. Come and worship in the cool!

Bring Your Bibles. We're taking advantage of the change of venue to try some other changes some other changes for the Summer. We'll be saving paper by shortening the bulletin a lot.  We'll be projecting hymns on a screen, and we'll not be printing out the readings in the bulletin, so bring your Bibles if you want to read along.

Ernestein Flemister Visits
Absalom Jones
Former Grace Church vicar Ernestein Flemister was a surprise visitor at the 10 am worship service last Sunday.

In her remarks, she told the congregation that she's recovering nicely from a bout with lung cancer.

Ms. Flemister is currently rector of Saint James House of Prayer Episcopal Church in Tampa, Florida.

Short Subjects

Marie White, J White's sister, made it through her four hour bypass surgery Friday and is doing quite well. The family asks for continued prayers as this is only one of her medical conditions.
Shirley Allen, a former member living in New Mexico, spent from April 9 to June 8 in the hospital or rehabbing in a nursing home. She is now recuperating at home, and getting stronger gradually. She would appreciate continued prayers from her friends at Grace. She also said she would appreciate cards or emails from those in the congregation who know her. She also asked for prayers for a family member named Jared. Her email is slallen35@yahoo.com; her address is 1505 South Pacific Street, Las Vegas NM  87701.
Free Meal at Grace July 11

A free meal will be served to all comers at Grace Church on July 11 from 5 pm to 8 pm.  The meal is sponsored by Life Renewal Fellowship Church (that worships at Grace on Sunday afternoons) and is supported by Grace Episcopal Church. Grace members are invited to come to the meal to have a meal with the crowd that's expect to come for a needed free meal.
Hallmarks of a Healthy Congregation

Grace Staples points out the following in this month's Interchange from the Diocese of Southern Ohio:
Under the Diocese's first priority of "Support Healthy Congregations," the Commission on Congregational Life has adopted the "Hallmarks of Health." These measures will serve as a guide for developing congregational development programs and in making decisions about grants and funding.
"These hallmarks of health provide specific qualities that we believe define, form and strengthen congregations," said the Rev. Canon Jack Koepke, canon to the ordinary and team leader for the first mission priority. "We encourage congregations to assess their strengths and places for growth and to make a conscious decision to embrace these hallmarks of health."Hallmarks of a Healthy Congregation

As you read these, think about how you think Grace Church is doing. Then tell the editor at eGraceNotes@GraceCollegeHill.org.

Hallmarks of Health

Healthy congregations and faith communities are marked by:

A clear sense of identity. Possess a clear and animated sense of Christian identity with an expectation that every member of that community is able to articulate in his or her own words the gospel story, why it matters, and why it matters here.

Radical hospitality. Deliberately invites, welcomes, receives and cares for those who are strangers.

Inspiring worship. Offers inspiring worship that glorifies God and leads to participation in the mysteries of Christ and his ministry of reconciliation.

Intentional faith development and formation for discipleship. Develops rich opportunities for people to learn and reflect in community at all stages.

Adventuresome, risk-taking mission and service. Identifies opportunities and equips its members to advance the healing, wholeness and justice of God's reign, regardless of whether those who are served become part of the faith community.

Extravagant generosity. Offers ministries that address our spiritual need to give in ways that go beyond expectations.

Accountability and collaboration. Practices and nurtures collaboration and accountability within the community, the diocese and the wider church.

Grace Values: Be Guided Always by Honesty and Integrity

Absalom JonesMission Council recently voted to reaffirm the Grace Church Values Statements. Last Sunday, Ken Lyon was the first of several members who will speak about each value during Sunday worship.  Here's what he said about Be Guided Always by Honesty and Integrity:

If you watch very much of the news these days, it seems that we hear about is people who lie cheat and steal. You wonder if there are any people left in the world that are honest or have any integrity. When I feel that way, I think about the people I know at Grace Church. The people around me here are honest and do have integrity--at least as far as that is possible for mere mortals.

Honesty and integrity are similar qualities, but I think there's a bit of difference. Honesty is what we do; integrity is who we are. An honest person tells the truth even when it's difficult. They not only tell the truth to and about others, more importantly, they tell the truth about themselves--when they make a mistake, they 'fess up, even when they wouldn't otherwise be caught. As for integrity, a person with integrity is solid--they remain who they are no matter what the situation or who they're dealing with, from the highest to the lowest.

But Grace Church's value statements are more than exhortations to us as individual members, they apply to us as an organization.

What does it mean for Grace Church to be honest? One word I think about is transparency. We're transparent when we are open about our decision-making process, when there aren't "in groups" or secret meetings, when everyone pretty much knows what's happening. As for integrity, as with individuals, that means holding to our values even when it might cause problems. For example, I know that putting those flags over our front door upset some folks who see them while driving up Hamilton Avenue. Maybe it's even cost us members. But we put them up and keep them up because we think it's important to let the world know what we stand for.

I think we're doing well as a church with honesty and integrity. But perhaps there are things that I'm not seeing. If you know some ways in which we're not living up to these values, then, for God's sake, do something to help Grace Church be honest and live with integrity.

Thanks to ...

... Don Wake (one of our newest members) for bringing his grass edger and edging and weeding all the walks this past week on these hot, hot days! Be sure to take a look around and admire his work. By the way, have you seen the beautiful hydrangeas in bloom on the south side of the church?

... Ruth Bertram who also bore the heat to clean and scrub the upstairs refrigerator / freezer, sinks and counter tops. They shine! ( ---and so does she in our estimation! ) Now let's keep them that way. (Ruth also cleaned the downstairs kitchen a couple weeks ago.)

... the congregation for your prayers from Rick Visbal. For eight years he worked temporary construction jobs because he couldn't find a permanent job.  Since Grace members started praying for him, God has been blessed him with a good permanent job and a car and an apartment that he desperately needed.

... Don Wake for all of the help he gave Bob Jones last week in weeding and edging.  We are especially grateful considering how hot it is yet he was still willing to volunteer his time to work in the heat.

... Ken Lyon from the Executive Committee for his ongoing and generous contributions to Grace Church. His most recent contribution is getting the music for our Summer services projected on a big screen for the first worship service in July.

He is providing this additional technical support after years of providing technical support for our office. He has set up much of our office computer technology and has provided ongoing user support to our office volunteers. In addition, he has donated many hundreds of dollars of office equipment. The new monitor that is on the office computer was not only a donation from Ken, but he also provided all of the technical knowledge to get it up and running.

Ken has been instrumental in publicizing Grace Church. He created and maintains our website and our Facebook page. He was won an award from the Diocese for eGraceNotes, our weekly emailed newsletter. He creates Grace Notes from eGraceNotes for hard copy distribution with our bulletin each week.

Ken teaches adult Sunday School every Sunday morning, and was, for eight years, mentor of the Grace Church Education for Ministry classes.

Finally, he's a Mission Council Member and helps with the Mission & Formation Team Leaders. He is known for being a diplomat and being able to take all sides of any issues that are being discussed and find a middle ground that meets everyone's needs without making anyone feel slighted.

We hope that the members of Grace Church will take some time this week to thank Ken for his many contributions.
