Healing Services Again at Grace Next Week
Next Sunday's 10 am worship service will be the regular Sunday Celebration of Wholeness and Healing. The preceding Wednesday (next Wednesday), will be our regular second Wednesday Celebration of Wholeness and Healing. Of that event, leader Hawley Todd says: I have great news about this Wednesday's Celebration of Wholeness and Healing. A couple will be flying in from Manhattan to come to the service. We have had folks drive from Louisville and Columbus and places in Indiana but flying in from New York is a whole new thing! Thank you all so much for setting such love and goodness in motion! Come and join us and make this a loving, healing, vibrational celebration of the highest order! We start at 7. However come whenever you can make it. Bring friends and open hearts and healing hands for all! Grace Church will also be having a free community dinner in the Great Hall that evening from 5 to 8 pm. Many of you came last time. It was wonderful. I hope you will do so again! Monday is the Feast of the Transfiguration. May Wednesday be the love feast of our transfiguration into even deeper wholeness! Join us and let's set a light to shine for all the world to see. Obviously, I can hardly wait to see what God will do this time. Blessings and love to you all. And if you are unable to join us in your physical form, do join us in prayer and light. |

Grace Values: Honor everyone's age, race, economic situation, sexual orientation, family configuration and religious approach.
Mission Council recently voted to reaffirm the Grace Church Values Statements. Mary McLain spoke on "Honor everyone's age, race, economic situation, sexual orientation, family configuration and religious approach" at last Sunday's service.
Our value statements are similar to the 10 commandments: Simple and easy to understand but complicated in application. In fact this elaboration of ours on the commandments is pretty cheeky--it puts us right out there on top of the our hill saying "look at us"--when the most I think we can do is say "with God's help" the way our baptismal vows have us say that we will respect the dignity of every human being--with God's help. In the prayer book catechism, after the part about the ten commandments, it even poses the question, "Since we don't fully obey them are they useful at all?" And the answer is "Since we do not fully obey them, we see more clearly our sin and our need for redemption."
When Roger asked me to speak on one of our values, I chose: "Honor everyone's age, race, economic situation, sexual orientation, family configuration and religious approach." I chose this one because for over 30 years I worked enforcing the state and federal laws concerning discrimination--the dis-honoring of people based on factors over which they had no control. I get pretty outraged at dis-honoring.
The thing about the commandments and these values is that there are no asterisks or exceptions, Take, for example, the one about economic condition. Honoring everyone's economic condition. We don't get an exception if they are smelly, unwashed, ragged, or beg.
And what does honoring mean? Tolerating? Chuck Bowles used to say he didn't want to be tolerated, he wanted to be accepted. Maybe there are levels of honoring--like Ken Lyon talked one time when he spoke on levels of caring and giving. He said it is easy to help people who are victims of a natural disaster but harder when the person's own actions or decisions led to their hardship. So what level are we at when we invite a person in but make them stand at the door and not sit with them? Is it honoring if we complain that everyone is not contributing equally when we have no idea the hardships they may face with unemployment, underemployment, poverty wages or obligations we know nothing about?
This honoring stuff is tricky.
We live in a time now when more people live in poverty than in the so-called Great Depression, but our culture still tells us that the poor deserve to be poor. The culture says they could work if they wanted to, or they have no skills because they didn't go to school, or they drink, or take drugs. If it is their own fault, we have no responsibility--a neat exchange. And the hungry deserve to be hungry too, by this reasoning. I know the people of Grace are better than this, but we have to be vigilant--we are not immune to the messages of the culture. It does get tricky.
So, let's ask God to help us honor each one we meet--no exceptions. Leave the judging to God. She can see everyone's insides.

Peanut Butter? Toilet Tissue? Canned Goods? It's all needed at the Pantry.
Tomorrow, the first Sunday of the month, is the Sunday designated to give non-perishible items for the Christ Community in College Hill food pantry. What do they need? Probably whatever non-perishables that appear on your own family's grocery list again and again. Peanut butter and jelly, cereals, macaroni and cheese, canned meats or tuna, canned soups, fruits and vegetables are all good choices. Roger Perna notes that toilet paper can't be purchased with food stamps but folks still need it! Don't have any of these to spare? Not to worry, just bring as much folding money as you can spare and put it in the can on the sign-up table. CCCH will do the shopping for you. And each hungry tummy says THANK YOU!

Education for Ministry Resumes in September
Would you like to study what's really in the Bible like you've never studied it before? Survey the history of Christianity from its beginnings until now? Grapple with the insights of the theologians who have influenced Christianity as it is today? And do it all while gaining insights into how what you're learning applies in your daily life? Check out Education for Ministry. This extension program from the University of the South School of Theology could be just what you're looking for. Here's what two students recently said about EfM: "Wonderful fellowship! Unique view of the history of the world & humankind's understanding & ongoing relationship with each other and God! Would highly recommend to anyone who has ever asked "Why?" concerning their own or another's belief system." "Through EfM I learned about my Judeo-Christian faith from Genesis to the Gospels, and I learned about the early Church and the miracle of its origin and survival in the Acts of the Apostles and the Epistles. Most important of all, I learned that Jesus is in my life and all I have to do is invite Him into my consciousness to make His presence a reality. "EfM has made it easier for me to have personal relationships with clergy, staff, and fellow worshipers. I guess you could say that I now feel that I am part of a community and not just a churchgoer. I know that these feelings began in the EfM sessions, in particular when I became a part of the small EfM community." There are two opportunities for EfM in the Cincinnati area for the coming school year. Classes start in mid September and run through May. The first is on Monday evenings at Grace Episcopal Church in College Hill. Classes begin September 10 and are from 7 to 9:30 pm. The second is a new group at St Anne's in West Chester on Tuesday evenings. The exact start times are still tentative. Grace Church member Hawley Todd TSSF (who is also our Diocesan EfM coordinator) is mentoring both classes. For more information or to sign up, please contact Hawley at todd@episcopalhealing.org or 513-967-6581. Read more about EfM on the University of the South EfM website or on the Diocesan website.

Thanks to ...
... to Grace Staples for everything--because it seems she has done everything! Just in the recent past, she's been a Mission Council member, clerk of Council, IHN Coordinator, Parolee facilitator & cook, office worker, usher, Sunday School teacher, Eucharistic Minister, Choir member and more. This is only what she does at Grace. She also mentors children at her neighborhood school, volunteers at her church in Florida during the winter, drives her husband everywhere, and is an involved mother and grandmother. She has kept all of us on track, reminding us of our due dates and reports and has offered to help us when we fall behind. Let us give thanks for the Grace of Grace!
... everyone who helped set up the Great Hall this week for services.
... Belinda Perna for caring for Mtr. Kimberly's twins during last Sunday's service.
... Wanda Miller, Roger Perna and Ruth Bertram for their work in the office this week. The office was a flurry of activity on Thursday morning with Wanda, Ruth and Roger all working diligently to clean out files and catch up on what seemed to be a variety of administrative tasks. Thanks for their ongoing hard work to help keep us on track.
... John Thayer for agreeing to provide us with a hand bell arrangement for today's service.
... Rhonda Sharp for noticing the above folks who need to be thanked for their contributions to the life of the Grace Church congregation.

Altar Flowers
This week, altar flowers are given in thanksgiving for Grace Staples' 76th birthday and in memory of her mother's birthday, by Grace Staples. Last week's altar flowers were given to remember the 74th anniversary of Bill & Marge Lyon's wedding by Ken & Carol Lyon.
There is no one signed up for next week's flowers. To donate altar flowers on the Sunday of your choosing, see the sign-up sheet in the church near the upper Belmont entrance. Or call the office. Or donate online here.

Some Humor
One Sunday morning, the pastor noticed little Alex standing in the foyer of the church staring up at a large plaque. It was covered with names and small American flags mounted on either side of it.The six-year old had been staring at the plaque for some time, so the pastor walked up, stood beside the little boy, and said quietly, "Good morning,Alex." "Good morning, Pastor," he replied, still focused on the plaque. "Pastor, what is this?" The pastor said, "Well son, it's a memorial to all the young men and women who died in the service." Soberly, they just stood together, staring at the large plaque. Finally, little Alex's voice, barely audible and trembling with fear, asked, "Which service, the 8:30 or the 11:00?" Thanks to Wanda Miller for passing this along.
