Grace Values: Serve God by sharing with those in need and by working actively for social justice."

Absalom Jones Mission Council recently voted to reaffirm the Grace Church Values Statements by having a congregation member speak on each one during a Sunday service.

Last Sunday, Wanda Miller spoke on "Serve God by sharing with those in need and by working actively for social justice."  Here is what she said:

I thought, "Holy moly, what do I know about this?" Then it came to me how this is what I do.

"Helping those in need."

It is easy to help those in need who we do not know personally--like giving through the United Way. We give food to the College Hill Pantry, give dollars to wherever. We're finished; we've done our part. No fear of personal relationships. No danger of personal involvement. No touching the untouchables.

How about those who need help physically, mentally and emotionally? How about an unknown person who walks into our service, looking for food and acceptance? Do we listen to their needs, to their worries? Do we respond by listening and feeding their needs?

Have you ever helped someone who has hurt you? (Your own kids don't count.) I have! We need to do what we can to lead them to Jesus; whether giving them help with food or by listening.   I've learned that a monetary gift is not always good as it can be used for drugs. I believe helping them is our mission--our obligation, by turning the other cheek.

"Actively working for social justice."

What does that mean?   I guess it means that we stand up for what we believe to be right--stepping out of our comfort zone and doing something actively. Many of you know that I have a child in a Federal Prison. He has spent most of his life locked up since he was a juvenile. Lord knows that hurts.

If I was younger and richer, I'd work for social justice so that we have more rehabilitation, not warehousing of our young offenders. I will always love Robb. I know God loves him. He is a child of God. I pray for him daily.

Let's all work for social justice as we see injustice. That's a value we need to embrace if we are true to ourselves and to our faith.

All of the above and all of the values discussed over the past weeks go back to our first value--we are to look for the face of Jesus in everyone we meet. As Father Howard said this morning, and as Hawley said a few weeks ago: "Treat everyone as a Child of God"

Thanks to ...

... to those who have made the the ChiKung/TaiChi workshop satisfying in so many ways from Jackie Millay.  Special thanks to Bob Jones and J White for cleaning and preparing the sweet, 'just-right room' to have class in.  More thanks to Rhonda for some extra help.  And, hats-off to Grace Episcopal Church itself for supporting this. I was delighted with the overall flow, connection, and contribution of each of the class participants as the joys of experiencing the 'Chi' in a variety of ways became apparent.  Truthfully,  I see the 'Chi' as a fine example of Divine Grace. May we all be continually blessed with its infinite generosity and flow.

Snack 'n Chat Becomes Birthday Party

Last Sunday's Snack 'n Chat following the Sunday service became the occasion for wishing "happy birthday" to two of our beloved members, Grace Staples and Ray Betts. You'll have to ask them how many previous birthdays they've celebrated.

Thanks to J White for the picture.
Absalom JonesAltar Flowers

This week's altar flowers are given to honor our wardens, Roger Perna and Wanda Miller, by an anonymous donor.

Last week's altar flowers were
given in thanksgiving for Grace Staples' 76th birthday and in memory of her mother's birthday, by Grace Staples.

There is no one signed up for next week's flowers. To donate altar flowers on the Sunday of your choosing, see the sign-up sheet in the church near the upper Belmont entrance. Or call the office. Or donate online here.

In response to one of our members' conversion with respect to the inclusion of humor in church newsletters, we will continue to post items which at least some of our members and friends will find entertaining.

This week's entry, of course, applies only to sermons heard in places other than Grace Church.
