Sunday is Epiphany--the Magi Find Jesus

This Sunday--the Feast of the Epiphany--we celebrate the time when astrologers from the east came looking for the King of the Jews and found Jesus.

Sunday's worship order will be our usual order, minus Communion. Judy Handy, Worship Team Co-Chair explains:

Due to scheduling issues, we have been unable to engage supply clergy for this Sunday, January 6th, The Feast of the Epiphany. We will not celebrate Holy Eucharist, therefore, but will proceed according to directions found in the Prayer Book. We are very fortunate in that Ken Lyon has agreed to lead our worship and preach this week. We look forward to seeing you on Sunday.

Let's Talk About Prayer

This year, let's talk about our spiritual lives and help each other grow.

In my experience, we don't talk much about prayer or our prayer life at Grace Church. I think prayer is too easily dismissed as "What's there to talk about?" or "We all know how to pray." I don't think it's that simple.

First of all:  Why pray?  To me, prayer is about our relationship with God, Jesus and/or the Holy Spirit.  It is about making and maintaining that connection for the purpose of transformation for ourselves and our community. Transformation to be the person or community we are called to be. Why do you pray?

Secondly, there are many kinds of prayer.  There are the prayers found in our Book of Common Prayer. There are centering prayer, meditative prayer, journaling and more. My prayers are usually through journaling, but I often do silent prayer. I've tried centering prayer but I haven't been very good at it. How do you pray?

And finally, there is what to pray for. Usually, I do simple prayers of petition and intercession. Occasionally, I just try to listen.  What do you pray for?

Let's talk.

Thanks to Carol Lyon for this article.
A Call to Pray for Our Elected Officials

Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has joined other religious leaders in calling for daily prayers for the President, Vice-President, United States Congress and elected officials beginning January 3, the first day of the new Congress until January 21, the inauguration of the President of the United States.

The Presiding Bishop suggests the following prayer from our Book of Common Prayer (pages 821-822):

O Lord our Governor, bless the leaders of our land, that we may be a people at peace among ourselves and a blessing to other nations of the earth. To the President and members of the Cabinet, to Governors of States, Mayors of Cities, and to all in administrative authority, grant wisdom and grace in the exercise of their duties. To Senators and Representatives, and those who make our laws in States, Cities, and Towns, give courage, wisdom, and foresight to provide for the needs of all our people, and to fulfill our obligations in the community of nations. To the Judges and officers of our Courts give understanding and integrity that human rights may be safeguarded and justice served. And finally, teach our people to rely on your strength and to accept their responsibilities to their fellow citizens, that they may elect trustworthy leaders and make wise decisions for the well-being of our society; that we may serve you faithfully in our generation and honor your holy Name. For yours is the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Amen.

Altar Flowers
The flowers on the altar Christmas Sunday were given by Grace Staples in thanksgiving for her brother's successful surgery.

Thank you again to all those who donated flowers for Christmas.  The church looked beautiful.

If you would like to donate flowers in January, all four Sundays are open.  The suggested donation is $35 for one Sunday.  You may sign up on the flower sheet by the Belmont door, or call the church office.  Or you can donate here.
 Thanks to ...

... to all the people of Grace Church from Bob Jones for the beautiful Christmas card and the very nice Christmas gift you all gave me.
