Community Dinner Coming Again Wednesday

The next Community Dinner at Grace Church is coming this Wednesday, January 23.  J White tells us that we'll be having several kinds of chili--mmmmmm!

These free dinners are offered on the second and fourth Wednesday of every month by Grace Church and the Life Renewal Discipleship Church.

All are welcome, regardless of ability to pay. Come and enjoy the food and the hospitality.
It's Time to Nominate New Mission Council Members

At the February 17 Annual Meeting of Grace Church, we'll elect three to six new members of Mission Council.  Mission Council is the body that has overall responsible for the operation of the church.  Members are elected to terms of three years.  We have three people whose terms haven't expired:  J White, David Mukasa and Ken Lyon. Our by-laws state that Council must have six to nine members, so we need to elect at last three members, and may elect up to six.

Think about who you'd like to see leading Grace Church into the future.  Then tell either member of the Nominating Committee, Mary McLain (513-541-8509, maryemclain55@gmail.com), or Ken Lyon (513-382-6401, ken@lyonhouse.us).

PS:  We'll also be electing Senior and Junior Wardens, Diocesan Convention alternate delegates, and perhaps some Team Leader members of the Mission & Formation Team. We'll discuss this in a future article.
Altar Flowers

The flowers on the altar this week are given in memory of Beverly Ashton and Marueen Back, whose friends donated to the Memorial Fund.

If you would like to donate flowers for the altar, the suggested donation is $35 for one Sunday.  You may sign up on the flower sheet by the Belmont door, or call the church office.  Or you can donate online here.
 Thanks to ...

...an Ruth Bertram for contributing a new pc for the office.  The old one was getting quite sloooooooow. The office volunteers love you!

Do you love the laughter of little children? Do you love their enthusiam? If so why not try being a Sunday School teacher? Or if you're not ready to teach, are you willing to be a helper? To volunteer or for more information, contact Carol Lyon (513-919-0542, Spikelyon@gmail.com).

Perhaps the sacred has appeal for you. You can learn to set up the altar for communion. with our revered silver chalices and ewers. You can learn about the liturgical year when you put up our beautiful hangings. On the job training is available. One hour, one Saturday a month is all the time that is required. Children and Gun Violence

Thus said the LORD:

A cry is heard in Ramah -

Wailing, bitter weeping -

Rachel weeping for her children.

She refuses to be comforted

For her children, who are gone.

(Jeremiah 31:15 )

Today, we weep for our children who are gone.

We weep for the 20 small children lost in the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

We weep for the 7 children and teens who are killed by guns each and every day in our nation.

A child or teen dies or is injured from guns every half hour.

  • 18,270 children and teens died or were injured from guns in 2010.
  • 50 children and teens died or were injured every day
  • 351 children and teens died or were injured every week

More children and teens die from guns every three days than died in the Newtown

massacre. Between 1979 and 2010, 119,079 children and teens died from guns. This was more child and teen deaths in 32 years than U.S. soldiers killed in action in the Vietnam (47,434), Korean(33,739), Afghanistan (1,712), and Iraq (3,518) wars combined.

Our children's peace and safety, security and well-being is important. What can we do?

Pray: Pray for children and those who would harm them that all may know peace, love, justice, and well-being. Pray that we act to make our lives and our nation reflect the world God intends.

Educate: Share the facts about child gun deaths. Talk with children and young people about the glamorization of violence in our culture and how we can uphold values of peaceful conflict resolution and community.

Serve: Contribute your time, talents, and treasure to support local programs that are working for children's safety and well-being, such as after school programs, conflict resolutions programs, family support initiatives and child abuse prevention efforts.

Advocate: Encourage the President, members of Congress and other decision-makers and community leaders to:

  • Keep guns out of the hands of children and those who would use them against children through sensible gun safety measures.
  • Strengthen support for children facing violence in their communities and families, and for children with unmet mental health needs.
  • Offer parents and children the resources, support and tools they need to survive and work against the culture of violence, in which family violence is epidemic, child abuse and neglect are widespread and children are exposed to television, movies and video games that glamorize guns, bloodshed and brutality.
