The Bishop is Coming, the Bishop is Coming!

Retired Bishop Ken Price will celebrate Palm/Passion Sunday at Grace Church tomorrow, Sunday, at 10 am. Lunch will follow the service in the Great Hall.  Join us to celebrate this special Sunday of the church year, and to greet the bishop.

Sunday's service starts in the Small Assembly Room, from which we will process into the church. If you are able, join us there!

Those of us who were members and friends of Grace Church about six years ago remember how helpful Bishop Price was to the continued health of Grace Church. After his recent retirement, Grace Church invited him to visit us so we could thank him.
Holy Week at Grace Church

Maundy Thursday service
will be held at 7:30pm with Fr. Bob Hufford celebrating the first of what has become our Eucharist or Communion worship service.

On Good Friday, from noon to 3pm, the annual Community Good Friday Service will be conducted at Grace Episcopal Church. This service is sponsored by the College Hill Ministerium--a group of many churches in the College Hill area.

The service is structured around the seven last words of Jesus from the cross. Preachers for this service include Rita Bryant from Life Renewal Discipleship Church, Ken Lyon from Grace Episcopal Church, Karen Johnson from College Hill Presbyterian Church, Eugene Ellington from Consolation Baptist Church, Dan Weyand-Geise from First United Church of Christ, and Todd O'Neal from House of Joy Christian Ministries. There will be hymns and special music throughout the service.

Please join us as we remember the importance of this sacred day. In past years, this traditional service has been a meaningful experience for all who have attended. Come when you can, leave when you must.

Celebrate Easter with Flowers

Flowers at Easter make Grace Church even more beautiful.  If you would like to donate flowers please sign up on the sheet by the Belmont door or call the church office at 513-541-1415 or simply go to our online donation page:  gracecollegehill.org/payments.shtml.
Thanks to ...

... Roger Perna and all who helped with Joseph Black, Sr.'s Funeral today (Saturday).

... J. White for helping Rhonda Sharp with refreshments, set-up and moderation of Friday's book discussion group that was followup to the Restoring Authentic Identity Seminar the previous Saturday.

... Don Wake for mopping the floors of the Small Assembly Room and the Great Hall in preparation for the big "do" this Sunday.

... Everyone who helped make Grace Church ready to host ECOT Testing.

... Community Dinner Volunteers last week.

... Bread Basket Pastry Company at 3218 W.  Galbraith Road for their food donations to the Community Dinner.

... Sam Spade, Carol Lyon and Judy Handy for leading meditations in our Friday morning Lenten series.

... Fr. Howard, the Mukasa family, and others who have visited Elizabeth Kelly.

Even though everyone who does something special might not get special recognition each week (although we do try), we are aware of how hard members of this congregation work together to keep this church going.  Most of the work done in this church is by volunteers, so thank you to every one in this congregation for keeping our dream of Grace Church alive by your consistent contributions.  None of us could do it unless all of us were working together like we are.
 Selected Short Subjects

Mission Council needs a clerk. The job of the clerk is basically to keep minutes of meetings of Mission Council. This could be a good job for someone who wants to get involved at Grace Church, but doesn't have a lot of time and/or knowledge of the congregation (yet). The job requires someone who can take minutes and put them in electronic form so they can be sent out to Mission Council members. The time requirement is a few hours a month. Mission Council meets on the third Monday of every month from 5pm to about 6:30pm. If you're interested, or know of someone who might be interested, contact David Mukasa at (513) 616-4320.

Elizabeth Kelly has returned home
from the hospital and needs visits and encouragement. She lives at Twin Towers, 1213 South Ridge Drive. Her phone is 513-853-2993.

Easter Sunday Egg Hunt
is planned following worship next Sunday. Virginia Chapel reminds children to bring their baskets and parents to bring cameras.

RELAX INTO THE WEEKEND ~~ FEEL PEACE

This is a five class ChiKung/TaiChi series, Friday, April 5 through Friday, May 3, 6:30 to 8 pm. ChiKung is the practice of cultivating Chi (vital life force energy) through regular skill (Kung) routines.

Prayers and Thanksgivings

We give thanks for the life of Ernestine Flemister's mother, who passed away this week. The funeral will not be until May when her son will return to the states. Ernestein's phone is 614-895-2439, email is ernestein.flemister@yahoo.com and her home address is 212 W Idlewild Ave, Tampa, Fl 33604.

Prayers of praise and thanksgiving are offered ...

...  by Gwynne Gabbard who thanks everyone for their prayers and who thanks God for answered prayer. Her brother has found a wonderful place to live in Philadelphia, his city of choice, near transportation, and all the other things she asked God to bring into his life there. Also, her hip surgery went so well that she informs Rhonda Sharp that she has changed her hip's name from Pissy to Zippy.

... by Phillis Dietz. who sent a card to the congregation that said: "Thank you for your many emails and prayers. Believe me, they are working. This card may reach you after I return as it appears I may depart on the 16th, although those plans are in the hands of our travel insurance company which will fly me back first class accompanied by medical help. It's been very disappointing not to have flown from the mainland to Tasmania. Perhaps I have one more trip "home" in me yet."

Prayers for healing are asked for Judy Handy, Rev. Ernestein, Patty Rogers, The Rogers Family, Ken Lyon, Carl, Jackie, Robb Martin, Kim Martin, Melissa, The Erik Handy Family, The Darryl Handy Family, The Burlew Family, Jordan and Brandie, Bill and Viola, Lee Hardy, Christine Hicks, Derek, Rhonda Sharp, The Partin Family, Mitchell, Bob , Jo Jo, Jared, Shirley L. Grace Church Helps Homeless through Interfaith Hospitality Net

Grace Church is one of many Cincinnati area churches that help homeless families through Interfaith Hospitality Net.

Roger and Belinda Perna write of Grace's most recent effort:

Thanks to everyone who helped with the March 8th IHN.  We so appreciate you time and efforts.  The families all complimented us on such a nice comfort food meal of meatloaf, macaroni and cheese, green beans, baked potato bar, jello fruit salad, and home baked chocolate chip cookies with ice cream.

It seemed that we were well covered on the food preparation aspect, but were VERY SHORT HANDED on the activities part.  Since I could not line up anyone for activities, Roger and I covered that.  However, that left us short-handed with cleanup, which Mary and Wanda very graciously stepped in to help with, since we couldn't be in two places at the same time (imagine that).  Then, Roger did the overnight and got the families up and on with their day the next day. (Roger had also helped with food prep.)  Again, we were rather SHORT HANDED.  I'm sending our upcoming dates to you hopefully well in advance so that we are well staffed for these future dates.

Upcoming dates are (all Fridays):
    • April 19th    at CH Presbyterian
    • June 14th    at 1st UCC
    • Sept 6th     at  1st UCC
    • Nov 15th     at CH Presbyterian
Check your calendars and consider signing up for food prep, clean-up, activities, or sleepover. By the way, the activities only involve about 2 - 2 1/2 hours of your time (from about 6-8:30)b, and we have two suitcases full of board games, etc. if
you're not sure what to do. Really, the children don't seem to care so much about the particular activity - theymostly like the attention and interaction.   Please consider helping in some way.

Here's an extract from IHN's recent newsletter summarizing their 2012 activities:

The year 2012 was a great success. We served 96 families comprised of 367 individuals, 23 percent of whom were families with fathers (our highest percentage to date of families with fathers). Sixty-eight percent of individuals (251) served were children and 53 percent of these were under the age of five.

With the help of partner congregations, we served 27,696 meals and provided 9,232 nights of shelter. Our average length of stay went from 26 days in 2011 to 24 days in 2012 and 90 percent of families that stayed with IHN for seven days or longer moved into stable housing. Data also shows that less than 15 percent of families served returned to an area shelter.  Not too shabby!
