Emergent Education for Ministry
Hawley Todd reports on this year's overhaul of the Education for Ministry (EfM) curriculum. Education for Ministry (EfM) will be presenting a newly designed program this fall. While the old EfM program was good and helped form many of the leaders of the Episcopal Church, the fresh expression that EfM will have this year is designed for the 21st century. EfM has gone through the refiner's fire and the pure gold that was at the heart of the program has remained. Theological reflections and exercises to synthesize our life experiences with insights and wisdom from scripture, tradition and reason still remain at its core. Worship, fellowship and forming lifelong friendships also remain integral. The School of Theology at Sewanee (developer and coordinator of the EfM program) has listened to the suggestions of its participants in EfM ever since the beginning of the program, and it has evolved greatly over the years. However with the challenges facing our churches today, it was time for a complete overhaul and implementation of new means to deepen a sustaining spirituality for all participants. The old textbooks and common lessons have been retired. In their place, EfM will be using the same textbooks the best seminaries are using. Students in EfM truly will be getting a first-rate seminary education. However, what impresses me the most is the supporting materials for spiritual growth and formation that will be utilized each year. Having been a spiritual director for over three decades, I was stunned to see the depth of thought and prayer that has gone into these materials. I wish I had had materials that good when I went to seminary! EfM has always been a good program. The emerging EfM promises to be one of the best formation programs that any Christian denomination has to offer. If I was the bishop of a diocese, (personal position statement) I would require every person who desires to be in any position of leadership in my diocese to be a graduate of the "emergent" EfM! Hawley Todd, TSSF, serves as diocesan coordinator for EfM in the Diocese of Southern Ohio, and is the mentor of the EfM group that meets at Grace Church. Contact him at todd@episcopalhealing.org. PFLAG Extends Warm Welcome
Rhonda Sharp attended a PFLAG meeting last Tuesday. PFLAG (Parents, families and friends of lesbians and gays) is a 40-year-old organization of parents, families, friends, and straight allies uniting with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. Here's Rhonda's report: I attended a PFLAG meeting last Tuesday. I was not feeling well, but I went anyway, because I really needed some support. I dragged myself in looking like a rag and expected everyone to run from me, but I was quickly greeted and given all of the loving support, information, and contacts that a person could need. They were an AWESOME group of people. I left as soon as the meeting was over and I'd gotten all of the information they thought would help, but the rest of them stayed and munched and laughed and were having such a good time that it sounded like a party as I walked to the parking lot. When they found out that I attend Grace Episcopal Church, people expressed their appreciation of Grace's involvement in LGBT issues and our presence at the Pride Parade. They seemed more like a family than a support group. I am looking forward to returning next month. The Cincinnati chapter of PFLAG meets on the second Tuesday of each month at Mt. Auburn Presbyterian Church, 103 William Howard Taft Rd. Cincinnati, OH/ Read more about the Cincinnati PFLAG chapter at pflagcinci.org.

Remembering
Remember that special someone who helped you when you needed it the most? You can donate a bouquet of flowers on the altar on any Sunday in honor or in memory of them.
After the service, you may take the flowers home and give them to that special someone or you may leave them on the altar for the other services to enjoy.
The suggested donation is only $35. All the Sundays between new and December are available. Just sign on the flower sheet by the door or call the church office. Or donate online at gracecollegehill.org/payments.shtml.
The flowers on the altar last Sunday were given in celebration of Pete Staples' 90th birthday by Grace Staples.
