A spiritual home where all are welcome; a healing place in a broken world.

Our Values
Quick Links

In the next several issues, we'll be featuring examples of ways that the faith of our members and friends has translated into action.

Grace Shows Faith in Action at Ministry Fairs

If Grace parishioners or partners had any doubts, they saw exactly how we put our Faith in Action at the displays last week.  The Annual Giving Team put on Ministry Fairs during the Wednesday Night Community Dinner prior to the Drumming and Healing Service September 11th and during Snack and Chat after last Sunday's 10 am service.

Annual Giving not only keeps the lights on and doors open at Grace, but funds ministries--the work in Christ which draws us closer to God.

The Ministry Fairs showcased several Grace Church Ministries:

  • The Altar Guild displayed some colorful altar hangings.
  • The Flower Guild had a beautiful fresh arrangement and offered flower arrangement training for those interested--and several people signed up!
  • The Worship Team table showed several of the resources we use in our worship.
  • Education for Ministry shared the books for the newly re-vamped program.
  • Episcopal Healing Ministries offered an informative display on EHM's services.
  • Buildings and Grounds display of tools reminded us of all they do to keep the roof on and the grounds tended.
  • Communications showed off all the various ways that we get the word about about what's happening at Grace.
  • The Outreach Team's display featured information about Interfaith Hospitality Network as well as our Parolee Ministry.
  • The Pastoral Care Team's display featured the Prayer Shawl Ministry.
Our Grace Center partners were there, too. College Hill Yoga, The Oneness Blessing, Tai Chi/Chi Kung, and the Rainbow Band all participated, and we had a newcomer--the Hooping Class, whose instructor had several of our youth and adults practicing their hula-hooping skills.  She received several sign-ups for her class on the 15th.

Your Support is Requested

Flowers and Greens on the altar(s) at services...altar cloths that are crisp, clean, and liturgically correct for the season....parolees who have been rejected by others--even other churches--doing an honest day of physical work at Grace and then sitting down have a home-cooked meal and conversation where we look them in the eye and know that in the eyes of God we are equals.

These ministries--and others--depend on the pledges generated by Annual Giving.  Have these ministries touched your lives?  Have you given flowers in remembrance of loved ones who have died or to celebrate a wedding anniversary? Have you received a prayer shawl or a pastoral visit when you were ill?  Are you an EfM graduate?

If so, we ask you to reflect prayerfully on your pledge this year.

Many of you have received a letter from Grace Church asking for your support for 2014.  Please return the form provided with your pledge or gift. If you didn't get a letter, please consider supporting Grace Church with a gift.  You can give online on the Grace Church website (here), or send a check to the church office at the address below.

See pictures of the displays in the Grace Church photo albums here, including some action shots of Grace folks hooping!

Thanks to ...

... those who donated diapers for Ollie Thrower's new baby, from Ollie Thrower.

... everyone for your prayers and gifts for Ollie Thower and baby David, from Virginia Chapel.

... Barbara Wallace for donating a soup pot and several smaller pots for use in preparing the Community Dinners.

... Hawley Todd for the healing work he offers members of this church through group activities such as the Second Wednesday evening healing service or the individual healing services he offers to many people in the congregation.

... J White for leading the last two Friday morning Prayer and Meditation groups.

Tell us when you know someone should be thanked for their contribution. Email egracenotes@gracecollegehill.org.

Even though everyone who does something special may not be recognized each week (although we do try), we are aware of how hard members of this congregation work together to keep this church going.  Most of the work done in this church is by volunteers, so thank you to every one in this congregation for keeping our dream of Grace Church alive by your consistent contributions.  None of us could do it without all of us working together.
Person Sought to Provide Child Care During Sunday Worship

We are seeking a person to provide child care during Sunday worship. If you know of someone with the skills to care for a few infants and very young children, please contact J White (513-532-9362, mizwone@gmail.com). This will be a paid position.

We realize that there may be Sundays when there are no children to care for, however we believe that it's very important that this service be provided for those parents who want it.

Grace Volunteers Help Interfaith Hospitality Network Keep Families Safe and Fed

Grace volunteers hosted four homeless families (15 people) for the fifth time this year earlier this month.  Our evening at First United Church of Christ included serving everyone a hot homemade meal consisting of meatloaves (Mary McLain), mashed potatoes and gravy (Roger Perna), seasoned green beans (Wanda Miller), fruited jello and mixed green salads and rolls (Grace Staples) and cupcakes and ice cream novelties for dessert (Belinda Perna).  Belinda, Mary and Grace helped in cleanup.

David and Maria Mukasa and their children Mathias and Mariah were assisted by Roger Perna in entertaining the children with "basketball" of sorts and table games after the meal.  The families made lunches before going to their classroom "bedrooms" and Jackie McCray joined a UCC volunteer in keeping the families safe overnight and making breakfast the next morning.  David also provided one little guy with fatherly cuddling when he fell and scraped his arm.  (He didn't want to leave David's arms when it was time for the Mukasas to go home.)

The families told the UCC Coordinator, Susan Ley, that this was the best week they had experienced yet in the IHN program!  The other churches in College Hill that provide volunteers for the week are St. Clare, College Hill Presbyterian, St. Paul UCC, First Baptist, Second Baptist, Good News and Bread of Heaven.

New volunteers are greatly needed and you'll always have a helper.  The Mukasas said they really had a good time!  Please contact Roger or Belinda Perna if you can help.  Next Grace hosting is Friday, Nov. 15 at College Hill Presbyterian Church.

Altar Flowers

The altar flowers this Sunday were given by Rita Lyon to honor her parents Ken & Carol Lyon.

You can donate a bouquet of flowers on the altar on any Sunday in honor or in memory of anyone. The suggested donation is only $35. Virtually all the Sundays between new and December are available. Just sign on the flower sheet by the door or call the church office. Or donate online at gracecollegehill.org/payments.shtml.

Charity Checkup

We all know our contributions to Grace Church go 100% to the operation and upkeep of the church and its programs.   But we can't be so sure about other organizations.

In going over recent mail received from charities, I once again turned to CHARITY NAVIGATOR online (charitynavigator.org)  to check out some organizations I wasn't sure about.  I discovered that the "Alzheimer's Disease Research" organization didn't have a high standing but two other Alzheimer Research organizations had 4 star ratings--using 50% more of the funds raised for actual research instead of administration or fund raising.  I have found this online resource to give a quick reference as well as lots of detailed information on any charitable organization in question.  I highly recommend it.

Thanks to Grace Staples for this article.
