A spiritual home where all are welcome; a healing place in a broken world.

Our Values
Quick Links
During the Faith in Action Annual Giving Campaign, we're featuring examples of ways that the faith of our members and friends has translated into action.
Pledges Already Up 19%--Let's Celebrate!

This Sunday marks the official end of the Faith in Action Campaign. We will celebrate with good food and generous friends. Come to church this Sunday and help us celebrate following the 10am worship service.

What are we celebrating?

We have exceeded our goal of a 10% increase over last year. During this year's campaign, 26 households made pledges and donations of $52,560. Last year, $44,200 was pledged by 22 households.  That's a 19% increase! This is a reason to celebrate!

We also had a goal of six new pledgers. To date we have five new pledgers. Let's celebrate these new pledges.

Another goal was for 15 friends of Grace church to donate. We may have been a little overly optimistic in this category. Nonetheless, we did get seven friends to contribute $2600. Let's celebrate these friends of Grace.

Sunday is the official end to the campaign, but it is not too late to pledge or donate. Just send in your gift form or call the church office at 513-541-2415 or e-mail Carol Lyon at spikelyon@gmail.com, or donate online on the Grace Church website here

Let's celebrate our Faith in Action!

Carol Lyon, for the Annual Giving Committee: Sam Spade, Wanda Miller, Grace Staples and J White.

Community Dinner Serves 120 People

J White reports that 120 people were served at last Wednesday's Community Dinner--a record number by far.  Thankfully, enough food had been prepared to serve everyone great meatloaf, along with real potatoes and other accompaniments.

For the first time, the parlor was set up as a prayer room, and people came to share their needs and be prayed for by members of the sponsoring churches.

Both the dinner and the prayer room are a joint effort by Grace Church, Life Renewal Discipleship Church and Truth and Destiny Church.

The free Community Dinner continues on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Wednesdays of every month, starting at 5pm.
Roof Leaks Getting Attention

Last weekend's deluge revealed several places where Grace Church's various roofs are letting water into our building.  Especially noticeable was the rivulet running down the first column in the nave nearest  the upper Belmont door.  Other places:  the hallway outside the office, the acolyte closet and the wall over the doorway leading from the back hallway onto the Garth.

The Building Committee examined our roofs last week, along with a representative of a reputable roofing company, and believes it has identified the sources of the leaks.  We expect to be able to review a proposal to fix our leaks this week.  Stay tuned!

Selected Short Subjects

A Note from Former Member Chuck Bowles: First of all, I am still missing all of you.  Harold and I have moved.  Our new address is 117 Walton Way, Smyrna, GA 30082.  This place is saving us about $250 monthly and is bigger.  It's just three miles away from where we were.  I am working now at AARP.  Not an ideal situation but better than nothing (which is what a lot of people have).  Love ya and the gang!

Singers Wanted:
We are going to form a choir to sing for special events: Thanksgiving, Advent and Christmas. Anyone who is interested in singing is invited to join us at our first rehearsal on Sunday October 20 at 8:45 AM. If you think that you can't sing, talk to Bill. He's great at coaxing good voices out of someone--and he doesn't use force.
The Station is an illusion--It constantly outdistances us
The Station

By Robert J. Hastings.

TUCKED AWAY in our subconscious minds is an idyllic vision in which we see ourselves on a long journey that spans an entire continent. We're traveling by train and, from the
windows, we drink in the passing scenes of cars on nearby highways, of children waving at crossings, of cattle grazing in distant pastures, of smoke pouring from power plants, of row upon row upon row of cotton and corn and wheat, of flatlands and valleys, of city skylines and village halls.

But uppermost in our conscious minds is our final destination--for at a certain hour and on a given day, our train will finally pull into the station with bells ringing, flags waving, and bands playing. And once that day comes, so many wonderful dreams will come true. So restlessly, we pace the aisles and count the miles, peering ahead, waiting, waiting, waiting for the station.

"Yes, when we reach the station, that will be it!" we promise ourselves. "When we're
eighteen. . . win that promotion. . . put the last kid through college. . . buy that 450SL
Mercedes-Benz. . . have a nest egg for retirement!"

From that day on we will all live happily ever after.

Sooner or later, however, we must realize there is no station in this life, no one earthly
place to arrive at once and for all. The journey is the joy. The station is an illusion--it
constantly outdistances us. Yesterday's a memory, tomorrow's a dream. Yesterday belongs to a history, tomorrow belongs to God. Yesterday's a fading sunset, tomorrow's a faint sunrise. Only today is there light enough to love and live.

So, gently close the door on yesterday and throw the key away. It isn't the burdens of today that drive men mad, but rather regret over yesterday and the fear of tomorrow. Regret and fear are twin thieves who would rob us of today.

"Relish the moment" is a good motto, especially when coupled with Psalm 118:24, "This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it."

So stop pacing the aisles and counting the miles. Instead, swim more rivers, climb more
mountains, kiss more babies, count more stars. Laugh more and cry less. Go barefoot oftener. Eat more ice cream. Ride more merry-go-rounds. Watch more sunsets. Life must be lived as we go along. The station will come soon enough.

An Open Invitation to the Congregation from the Worship Team

The worship Team has been examining our Invitation to Communion. Do we want to be really inclusive or limit our invitation to baptized Christians?  Many Episcopal congregations are considering this issue.

Please join us at the next meeting of the Worship Team, which will be Sunday, October 20, following the worship service and Snack 'n Chat.

Come and share your ideas and beliefs. If you can't be there talk with Bill Jenne and he will share your opinions with the group.

Thanks to ...

From Carol Lyon for the Annual Giving Committee.

... all the generous donors, new ones and previous ones. I am amazed at the generosity.  Thanks you! Thank you!

... the Annual Giving Committee members for their hard work in making the "Faith in Action Campaign" successful. They are Sam Spade, Wanda Miller, Grace Staples and J. White. It certainly would not have been possible without them. They contributed good ideas, called people, wrote letters and made food for the kick-off and the closing celebration. They are great group of people to work with.

From Carol Lyon for the Annual Giving Committee.

... the Prayer Shawl Knitting Group for the gift of a prayer shawl to my mother, Ruth Leher. She was very touched and it is on display on her bed at the nursing home. I commend you for such worthwhile spiritual activities.  From Roni (Deborah Weinstein).

... Ruth Bertram for the new coffee maker in the Small Assembly Room.

... Mr. & Mrs. Robert Zimmerman for the donation of a freezer for use by the Community Dinner.  They responded to a notice on the Freecycle website.

... everyone who assisted with the Community Dinner - those who prepared food on Tuesday night, helped with set-up, helped with final food preparation on Wednesday, helped serve, came to visit with those in attendance, and helped with clean up. This has grown so large that it definitely is a group endeavor, so every bit of help that is offered is appreciated.

... Hawley Todd for providing the liturgy and leading the healing service, to Bob Laake for leading the drumming and to everyone who attended and participated in the Healing Service on Wednesday night.

Tell us when you know someone should be thanked for their contribution. Email egracenotes@gracecollegehill.org.

Even though everyone who does something special may not be recognized each week (although we do try), we are aware of how hard members of this congregation work together to keep this church going.  Most of the work done in this church is by volunteers, so thank you to every one in this congregation for keeping our dream of Grace Church alive by your consistent contributions.  None of us could do it without all of us working together.
Person Sought to Provide Child Care During Sunday Worship

We are seeking a person to provide child care during Sunday worship. If you know of someone with the skills to care for a few infants and very young children, please contact J White (513-532-9362, mizwone@gmail.com). This will be a paid position.

We realize that there may be Sundays when there are no children to care for, however we believe that it's very important that this service be provided for those parents who want it.
