A spiritual home where all are welcome; a healing place in a broken world.

Another Sunday, Another Surprise Soloist

Last Sunday, Grace Church was blessed with a first-time visitor who was moved to come forward and sing for the congregation during the service. We're happy that Amy Lloyd felt that her contribution would be welcome--and it was.
Just a few weeks back another first-time visitor, "Sissy," filled in when the scheduled soloist was unable to be with us.

The Spirit is moving at Grace!
Baptism, Confirmation, Reception, Reaffirmation--What're They About?

The Episcopal Church offer several rites that signify waypoints on your faith journey:

  • The rite of Baptism, done with water in the name of the Trinity, makes you a member of the universal Christian Church (and, of course, of the Episcopal Church), wherever and by whomever done. Baptism may be done at any age, and is typically performed by a priest during a regular Sunday service.  If want to be Baptized, or have a child you want to have baptized, please make your wishes known to the Senior Warden.
  • Beyond Baptism. Each of the following almost identical rites is performed by a Bishop, typically during an annual or semi-annual visitation to our church. If you wish to explore any of these options, please tell the Senior Warden.
    • The rite of Confirmation provides a way to make a mature public commitment to your faith.
    • If you have already made a mature public commitment in another faith tradition, you may choose to be Received into the Episcopal Church.
    • People who have entered a new level of spiritual life or who have returned to the church may wish take advantage of the rite of Reaffirmation of Baptismal Vows.

Each of these rites is spelled out in the Book of Common Prayer.

Grace Church Membership. Anyone who has been baptized, who identifies Grace as their home church and who makes Grace their principal place of worship is considered a member of this congregation. If you consider yourself to be a member, please make sure we have recorded your membership by giving us your name, address, etc, and specifying that you are a member.

If you would like to learn more about these rites, or about Grace Church, or the Episcopal Church, please inform the Senior Warden, who will arrange to get your questions answered.

Grace Christmas Cards Now Available

Christmas Cards are now available at Grace Church.  We've made up packets of six different Grace Church scenes which people may want to send this year. The text inside reads "Grace to you at Christmas."  The suggested donation is $5 for a packet of six cards and envelopes.  Packets are available on a table in the church.

Thanks to Wanda Miller for making this happen.
Selected Short Subjects

Leaky Roofs Fixed.  Kangaroof came last week to completely replace the flat roof over the Belmont side of the nave and to repair leaks in two other flat roofs.  A couple of weeks earlier,
Durable Slate repaired leaks in the slate roof over the Belmont side of the nave. The Building and Grounds Committee is hoping that this marks the end of the recent spate of roof leaks we've experienced.

In addition, the screen in the tower that had fallen in has been put back in place, preventing further water damage and keeping the birds out. Anyone have a use for about 3 inches of guano?  It's up in the tower, free for the taking.
Thanks to ...

... Sam Spade for agreeing to fund a new accounting pc.  This will make our treasurer's work a lot easier and will ensure that our system is uptodate and supported.

... everyone involved in the Community Dinner for the work you do on preparation on Tuesday night and for everyone who preps, cooks and serves on Wednesday and everyone who sets up and cleans up the Great Hall.

... everyone who assisted with the Parolee Day. Thank you also to those who donated coats for the Parolees.

Tell us when you know someone should be thanked for their contribution. Email egracenotes@gracecollegehill.org.

Even though everyone who does something special may not be recognized each week (although we do try), we are aware of how hard members of this congregation work together to keep this church going.  Most of the work done in this church is by volunteers, so thank you to every one in this congregation for keeping our dream of Grace Church alive by your consistent contributions.  None of us could do it without all of us working together.
Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and other important milestones in the civil rights movement, The Episcopal Church and the Diocese of Mississippi hosted a 90-minute forum, Fifty Years Later: The State of Racism in America, live-streamed from St. Andrew's Episcopal Cathedral in Jackson, Mississippi, on November 15. Watch the forum online at episcopalchurch.org/page/state-racism.

Thousands of viewers watched as a distinguished panel of national experts including Myrlie Evers-Williams, widow of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, and former Mississippi Governor William Winter, with a keynote address by Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori, explored issues of race and discrimination.

"Let us dream of a world where every family, language, people, and nation is gathered in the commonwealth of God," the Presiding Bishop said in her address. "Learn vigilance, teach and work for justice, that we might become the beloved community of God's rainbow people - every family, language, people, and nation gathered before the Lamb, himself one of the lowly and rejected.  Dream that world into being here on earth, and drive out hell to bring it to birth!"

Poll findings
Last week, a national poll released by The Episcopal Church reported that nearly all Americans (98%) feel that there is some discrimination in the U.S.  Harris Interactive conducted the online poll on behalf of The Episcopal Church among more than 2,000 U.S. adults.

On the other hand, the poll found more than 8 in 10 Americans agree that despite what may have happened in the past, they believe in the future Americans will be more accepting of all races.

You can read more about the poll here

Person Sought to Provide Child Care During Sunday Worship

We are seeking a person to provide child care during Sunday worship. If you know of someone with the skills to care for a few infants and very young children, please contact J White (513-532-9362, mizwone@gmail.com). This will be a paid position.

We realize that there may be Sundays when there are no children to care for, however we believe that it's very important that this service be provided for those parents who want it.
