IHN Night Successful
This past Friday we hosted the Interfaith Hospitality Network program which was held at First United Church of Christ.
Through our efforts, we were able to help four homeless families (a total of 17 people) gain a sense of safety as they are making their journey to a more stable existence.
Food and fellowship were provided by Belinda and Roger Perna, Wanda Miller, Virginia Chapel, J. White, Judy Handy and Camille Boykins. Our guests enjoyed a dinner of meat loaf, scalloped potatoes, mixed green beans and carrots, tossed salad, and brownies for dessert.
After dinner, we were joined by Maria Mukasa and the Rev. Will and Michelle Hagans from Life Renewal Church for games and entertainment for the children. The highlight of the evening was a rousing game of "Candyland" which was organized by Michelle Hagans. This activity mesmerized many of the children present. The ages of the children ranged from a set of 2 month old twins to a 7 year old. This was the Hagans first time partnering with Grace Church at IHN.
Roger Perna served as the overnight host. We were assisted by several members of First United Church of Christ.
Roger and Belinda really saved the day when Mary McLain came up ill and J White had to take her sister to the hospital. The important thing is folks stepped in and put the families first.
Thanks to Roger Perna, Grace Staples and Susan Ley of 1st UCC for information that went into this article. |

Volunteer Wish List Number Two
In the beginning of the year, sometimes we hear the call to do something different or add a new activity. Last weeks e-mail wished for help with Interfaith Hospitality Network. It included a hostess, someone to play with the kids and dinner set up. Those positions are still available for the next time we host. To volunteer e-mail Mary McClain at maryemclain55@gmail.com.
This week our wishes are for sewing and design. This can be done on your own in your own time. We wish for:
1. Someone to volunteer to design and make a frontal for the communion table in the nave. You can use your creative skills to make the design for the frontal and to implement it. Or you can do the design and team up with someone to make it. There are a lot of creative ideas on the internet to get you started. Or you can come up with your own.
2. Someone to volunteer to design and make the fair linen for the communion table. This is a smaller project than the one above but just as important because it is the covering used to put the sacraments on for communion.
If you would like to volunteer for either of these projects or if you would rather purchase one or both of the items above contact Carol Lyon at Spikelyon@gmail.com.
3. Someone to sew window coverings for the Great Hall. Again, put your creative skills to work. The treatment can be as simple or as complicated as you want. You can make all the coverings or you team up with a friend to work together. If you would like to volunteer to sew the window treatments contact J. White at mizwone@gmail.com.
Are any these volunteer opportunities calling you?

Thanks to ...
... all the folks mentioned in the IHN article above for making Grace's hosting evening a success. Even though everyone who does something special may not be recognized each week (although we do try), we are aware of how hard members of this congregation work together to keep this church going. Most of the work done in this church is by volunteers, so thank you to every one in this congregation for keeping our dream of Grace Church alive by your consistent contributions. None of us could do it without all of us working together.

Selected Short Subjects
Maree White, J White's sister, was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital Friday to be operated on for a burst appendix. Community Garden? A while back, Ken Lyon heard that someone at Grace was interested in the idea of starting up a community garden at Grace Church, so he asked around in College Hill and found some folks who would like to talk with someone at Grace about this. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember who at Grace might be interested. If you're interested in this, please let Ken know (ken@lyonhouse.us, 513-382-6401).

The College Hill Community Potluck is coming February 21 starting at 5:30pm. It'll be held at the College Hill Presbyterian Church, and is a great chance to meet residents of our neighborhood. |
